Non-Immigrant Visas: What are they?

A Non Immigrant Visa in Thailand is a classification of Thai Visas covering a variety of different activities in Thailand such as study, business, working, investment, retirement, and more.

A Thai Non-Immigrant Visa can be obtained for up to one year as either a Multiple Entry or Single Entry Visa. The entry classification refers to the number of times the visa can be used to enter and exit the country during the length of the visa.  It is possible however to obtain additional entries through the application and purchase of additional re-entry permits at your local Thai Immigration Office.

The rules for obtaining a Thai Non Immigrant Visa vary for different nationalities and some nationalities are required to obtain their initial Thai Non Immigrant Visa in their home country. All nationalities are required to obtain the initial Non Immigrant Visa at a Thai Embassy outside of Thailand before entering the country.

It is possible however for some current holders of other types of Thai Visas already residing in Thailand to obtain a Thai Non-Immigrant Visa at the local Thai Immigration office – but only on a case by case basis. If this type of visa switch is required, it is highly advisable to hire the services of a professional company specializing in this type of service – who have a strong relationship with the local Thai Immigration Office and clearly understand the procedures.

Upon entering Thailand, a newly acquired Non Immigrant Visa holder must apply for a Thai Work Permit with the Thai Ministry of Labor before beginning any official work.

Non-Immigrant 'B' Visa

A Thai Non Immigrant ‘B’ Visa – (B is for Business), is the associated type of Thai Non Immigrant Visa for foreigners in Thailand seeking employment or involvement in various investments such as establishing or investing in a Thai company or condominium. There are a variety types of Non Immigrant B Visas in Thailand depending on the specific type of activity of the visa holder such as a teacher, employee or investor.

Non-Immigrant 'ED' Visa

A Thai Non Immigrant ED Visa – (ED is for Education), is the associated Thai Visa for foreigners seeking a Thai visa to study or enroll in an government accredited educational organization in Thailand. An individual awarded an ED Visa in Thailand may not work and is not eligible for a Thai work permit.

Obtaining a Thai ED Visa can sometimes be organized directly through the sponsoring accredited Thai educational institution but can often be arranged through a third party organization such as SANS.

Non-Immigrant 'O' Visa

Non Immigrant ‘O’ Visa – also known as a (Marriage Visa, Guardian Visas, Retirement Visas or Volunteer Visa)

A Thai Non Immigrant ‘O’ Visa – (O is for Others), is the associated visa for foreigners seeking a Thai Visa for a variety of long stay purposes such as Thai Marriage Visa, Guardianship, Retirement, Volunteering, Medical Treatment and even a person who used to be Thai and would like to visit relatives in Thailand. This type of Thai Visa does not allow the visa holder to work in Thailand, however a person could apply for a Thai work permit on this visa as they begin a transition to another Thai visa type. BOI Visa

Re-Entry Permits


Obtaining an additional ‘Re-Entry Permit’ is required in order to leave and re-enter Thailand during the period of time a long term Thai visa is valid – only if the originally issued Thai Visa is stamped ‘Single Entry’.  A ‘Single Entry Visa’ (meaning you can enter Thailand only once during the entire length of the visa) is a common designation for many long term visas obtained at Thai Embassies abroad . This may be the case for any variety of Thai visas types, and is dependent upon the process taken during the initial visa application, possible restrictions based on location and/or the amount of fees paid when initially obtaining your Thai visa before entering the country.

Holders of Thai visas with ‘Single Entry’ status wishing to exit and then re-enter the country more than the just one time initial entry,  can still purchase additional re-entry permits from their local Thai Immigration once inside the country. SANS can assist Thai Visa holders in obtaining Re-Entry Permits from the local Thai Immigration office for you, with none of the headaches such as spending hours in early morning ques in long lines. 

90-Day Report

A 90-Day Report is a requirement for any Thai Visa holders remaining in Thailand longer than 90 days. It requires the Thai Visa holder to report to immigration certain information such as their current address. SANS can assist with all 90-Day reporting requirements by organizing and completing the entire process on your behalf.

Holders of Thai visas with Single Entry status wishing to exit and then re-enter the country more than the just initial entry can purchase additional re-entry permits from their local Thai Immigration.
